During the months of June through mid-October, outdoor weddings take place on the flagstone patio with spectacular views of Mt. Elbert and Twin Lakes. 

A large, protected gazebo on the eastern side of the home serves as an excellent spot for seated dinners, receptions, dancing or a backup ceremony location in case of bad weather.

The Venue

The Wolf Den is a private 5 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom mountain home that sits on nearly 6 quiet acres of wooded land. From the back patio, guests enjoy a picturesque view of Mt. Elbert, Colorado’s tallest peak, and the glacial waters of Twin Lakes. In addition to serving as a family retreat for short-term rental guests, the Wolf Den also welcomes events hosted exclusively outdoors on the flagstone patio or the home’s nearby gazebo.

Overnight Guest Capacity

The home’s nightly rental rate includes 12 guests; a $25 per person, per day “additional guest” fee will apply for overnight guests exceeding 12 to a maximum of 16. Additional guests exceeding 16 are not permitted, unless at owner’s discretion. Twelve guests are accommodated in beds; additional guests may use one queen-size sofa bed or one queen-size air mattress.

Event Capacity

The Wolf Den welcomes outdoor events hosting fewer than 12 guests or up to 60 guests. Events with greater than 60 guests will be considered at the owner’s discretion.

Services Provided

Event rental of the Wolf Den guarantees the exclusive use of the home and grounds. The venue fee includes other amenities, such as:

Venue Coordination: Each couple is provided with a list of vetted local vendors. Gretchen handles necessary communication with vendors regarding the home’s amenities. Couples are provided with optional day-of venue coordination that includes a representative of the home on site for the duration of your event. Homeowner requires day-of venue coordination at her discretion based on the number of guests attending or complexity of your event.

Pre-Planning Tours + Communication: Couple/vendors/family members are provided with access to touring or visiting the home prior to your event, as needed. These meetings must be coordinated with the homeowner’s schedule, as the property is rented throughout the year. Gretchen remains accessible to couples throughout the planning process, which includes communication by phone or email regarding home’s amenities, local resources or vendors, etc.

Amenities Available for Vendors: Use of the kitchen and appliances by caterers for warming, traying and chilling food; use of electrical for music and/or lighting; use of garage for storage or staging of floral and/or other décor.

Parking: Couples will have access to designated spots on the property driveway, as well other owner-specified parking areas. 

Recycling: Gretchen requires guests to make recycling receptacles available to visitors during events at the Wolf Den. Collapsible recycling bins and clear bags are provided and must be set up and used by guests during event. Please help us reduce the tremendous amount of trash each event contributes to the Lake County landfill! $50 of every venue fee collected by the homeowner goes toward an annual donation to Cloud City Conservation Center based in Lake County.

2020 event rental of the Wolf Den includes:

Venue Fee

The Wolf Den’s venue fee is determined by the number of guests on site during your event:

25 or fewer guests: $3,000

50 or fewer guests: $3,500*

75 or fewer guests: $4,000*

Please note that any events with 50 or more guests will be required to utilize portable restrooms during the event. The cost of these is included with the venue fee and all arrangements for portable restrooms will be made by Gretchen. 

On-Site Rental Furniture

The following furniture items are available for rental on site. Furniture rental must be requested and paid for 30 days prior to event. These items are not set up for guests; guests are also required to breakdown and store furniture after event, unless a $250 setup/breakdown fee is paid prior to event.

Local Lodging

Additional guests staying in the area are encouraged to stay at rental properties located within walking distance of the Wolf Den. A list of these properties is provided to guests at booking. This helps cut down on parking.

Other local lodging includes the Twin Lakes Inn, Mount Elbert Lodge (B&B + cabin rentals), and hotels in either Leadville or Buena Vista.

How to Book

Send an email to and include your desired event dates and approximate number of guests.

To reserve your wedding at the Wolf Den, 50 percent of the total event reservation will be required. The remaining 50 percent is due 30 days before the first night of your stay.

Event Rental Times

A 3-night minimum stay is required for all events held at the Wolf Den. Check in time is at 4 p.m. on the arrival date and check out is at 11 a.m. on departure date unless early check in / late check out has been arranged in advance at owner’s discretion. The caterer, entertainment and any other rental individual associated with the event must arrive and depart on the property the within same check-in and checkout time as the renter.


The Wolf Den does supply towels, linens, paper products, dishes, glassware, pots, pans and utensils for renter’s use within the home, but does not provide these items in large quantity for events. Lake County Pre-Paid trash bags and recycling bags are provided for event trash removal.

Restroom Facilities

The Wolf Den is a remote home that uses a septic system for waste management. Restrooms at the Wolf Den are not handicap accessible. For any event with 50 or more guests, use of portable toilets is required. The cost of portable toilets is included in the venue fee, and the homeowner makes arrangements for delivery, setup and removal of portable restrooms.

Noise Restrictions

Music is permitted on the grounds but sound must be kept at a level so as not to be audible from adjacent properties. Please be respectful of our neighbors, although our home does sit on nearly 6 acres. Any live music must be approved by homeowner. Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., during which time music should not be audible beyond the property.

Alcohol Use on Property

Alcohol is not provided on the property by homeowners. Guests are permitted to bring and serve alcohol to invited guests with the completion of event contract that outlines specific rules associated with alcohol use on the property. Please note that any third-party bartending service must be licensed in the state of Colorado and insured with general and liquor liability insurance. More details can be found in event contract.

Smoke- and Drug-Free Venue

Smoking is not permitted  anywhere on the Wolf Den property — inside the house or outdoors. The renter’s refundable security deposit will be withheld if smoking occurs. The use or possession of any illegal drugs or substances is prohibited.

Leave No Trace

The Wolf Den is a remote mountain home that is meticulously cared for by the Sparling family and friends. We encourage creativity and want wedding guests to decorate for your event, but we do ask that no nails, screws, staples, glue or anything that leaves residue or penetrating items be used on the walls, floors, exterior of the home, exterior of the shed or within the gazebo. Any damage will be charged after your event. 

Other decorating restrictions include:

ABSOLUTELY NO rice, rose petals, glitter or confetti, etc., thrown anywhere on the grounds.

No open flames unless contained in outdoor fire pit. This includes tiki torches, votive candles or other candles on reception tables.

Dance floors outside of the owner-designated area will not be permitted due to the property’s delicate high-altitude landscape.

Trash Removal

The memories made during an event at the Wolf Den will last a lifetime. So will your trash. Please use biodegradable products, reusable flatware or dishes during your event. 

Trash removal is not included in the venue fee or cleaning fee. Guests are provided with large pre-paid trash bags that can be used at a trash- and recycling-drop site located 10 minutes from the Wolf Den. 

Collapsible recycling bins and clear plastic bags are required to be used during events to help reduce tremendous trash impact caused by large events.

All trash and recycling must be removed from home after events/at time of check out. 

For a fee of $100, all trash and recycling can be removed after event, at renter-designated time or upon check out. This removal must be requested prior to renter’s check-in date.



The cancellation policies for event rentals will override those outlined in the Wolf Den’s short-term rental contract. All cancelations must be made in writing.

Cancellations within 3 days of the reservation completion will be refunded in full less a $250 administration fee.

Cancellations made more than 30 days prior to an event: 50 percent of the total rental amount is forfeited by Renter. The $250 portion of the refundable security deposit collected at the time of booking will be returned in full.

Cancellations made less than 30 days prior to the event: The entire rental amount is forfeited by Renter. 100 percent of the $500 refundable security deposit will be returned.

The Wolf Den may cancel rentals due to emergency conditions or events beyond the control of the homeowners. In case of cancellation initiated by the Wolf Den, all rental and deposit monies will be refunded in full.
